No CollegeQuest in Summer 2016

To our community partners, colleagues, students, and friends:

It is with regret that we at Champlain Valley AHEC announce that CollegeQuest will not take place in the summer of 2016. The Vermont AHEC Network is unable to hold CollegeQuest because we do not have a sustainable source of funding currently for this program.

Northeastern Vermont AHEC is preparing to analyze and organize four years of data on CollegeQuest outcomes into presentations and reports to reach partners and potential funders. The evaluation findings are compelling. CollegeQuest has made measureable impacts on students’ knowledge, confidence and behavior as it relates to collage and career success. Students that complete CollegeQuest are demonstrating rates of college enrollment and persistence much higher than expected. A full report of findings will be available January 2016.

Furthermore, Northeastern Vermont AHEC wants to share the reports and findings from the CollegeQuest data with organizations or groups that are interested in learning more. If you would like to receive this information, let us know. If you know of a potential partner or someone who might be interested in sponsoring CollegeQuest, please contact Jane Nesbitt, Executive Director at [email protected]. She will forward requests and information to our colleagues at the Northeastern Vermont AHEC.

We want to thank you for your continued support of CollegeQuest and all the Health Careers Exploration programming that reaches students in our region. Supporting these programs and students benefits the future of quality health care in Vermont – and for that you have our eternal gratitude.

Please do not hesitate to contact us for more information.

Traumatic Brain Injury Webinar

Effects of Chronic Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: Caregiver Perspectives and Knowledge Gaps

October 8, 2015
1:00 pm – 2:30 pm (ET)Defense Centers of Excellence_logo

Family caregivers of service members that experience chronic effects of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) notice that their loved ones experience many cognitive, emotional and behavioral problems. Caregivers often experience many of these same issues, disrupting family dynamics. They often feel marginalized by the medical system and conclude that their health care providers lack insight into their experience. Knowledge gaps also exist regarding what caregivers understand about mTBI and resources to help them manage symptoms and patient outcomes. This webinar will address these issues and explore how education for caregivers, family, friends, and health care providers could potentially enhance treatment outcomes and caregiver success.

For more information or to register, visit dcoe.mil/webinars. Please note, registration is required for each webinar. If you have any questions, email the DCoE webinar team at [email protected].

Champlain Valley AHEC Works to Improve HPV Vaccination Rates in Vermont

Champlain Valley AHEC Works to Improve HPV Vaccination Rates in Vermont

The Champlain Valley Area Health Education Center (AHEC) is taking a lead role for the Vermont AHEC Network in participating in a National AHEC program to improve HPV vaccination rates in Vermont. Working with the CDC’s “You are the Key to Cancer Prevention” program, the Vermont AHEC Network will offer education programs and materials for Vermont providers to improve the HPV vaccination rates of their patients. According to the Vermont Department of Health, 50% of teen girls and 70% of teen boys are NOT fully vaccinated against HPV.

Our HPV project lead Judy Wechsler wants you to know the most important things a provider can do to encourage HPV vaccination:

  • Recommend it! More vaccinations occur as the result of recommendations by a trusted provider.
  • Bundle it! Providing the HPV vaccine as part of the “bundle” of vaccines that 11 and 12 year old boys and girls routinely receive will result in higher vaccination rates.
  • Reinforce it! Reinforce the fact that the HPV vaccine prevents cancer.
