Housing Assistance
Regular Housing Policy
Champlain Valley AHEC will arrange housing for eligible students/residents participating in a rural rotation in Vermont if the rotation is at least 25 miles (one way) from campus. Champlain Valley AHEC needs at least one month to schedule housing.
If you would like to be provided with housing during your off-campus rotation, you should make your request by contacting Tammy Johnson, Champlain Valley AHEC Data Manager, at [email protected] or by calling 527-1474 x213.
Please note that a fully-refundable housing reservation fee of $50 is required from each student who commits to a housing placement. In the event that a student cancels their housing less than 10 days before the start of their rotation or fails to show up on their arranged arrival date, this deposit will go to compensate the housing host for their preparation.
Benefits
Both the homeowner and medical student benefit from the housing placement. Maddie, a UVM medical student on a Family Medicine rotation in Middlebury noted of her experience, “We both really enjoy the program. I appreciate Natalie’s hospitality in extending her home to me. Being able to stay closer to the clinic allows me to stay later for interesting procedures or helping out when needed while also giving me time to prepare for the exam and work on my community project.” Homeowner Natalie concurs, “it’s fun having a bright, inquisitive mind to chat with every day and it’s good to catch up on medicine and have someone around as I live alone.”
Emergency Housing Policy
For eligible students/residents who have not requested housing, Champlain Valley AHEC has an emergency housing provision. While students must arrange for their own emergency housing, they may be reimbursed for emergency housing up to 3 nights during a rural rotation, not to exceed $150 in total reimbursement (with documentation) for the rotation. Students may use emergency housing and still submit a travel voucher for a rotation.
If you need to submit an emergency housing voucher, contact Tammy Johnson, CVAHEC Data Manager, at [email protected] or by calling 527-1474 x213.
