Founded by the Champlain Valley AHEC in 2010, the Focus on Health Careers Conference has been a one-day health careers’ exploration conference for Vermont Champlain Valley high school students who might be interested in pursuing a health career in the future. Activities have included guest speakers, workshops and skills training in health-related career fields. Students have had the opportunity to meet both professionals in the health field and health professions’ students along with college admissions staff.
High school students in grades 9-12 from Grand Isle, Franklin, Chittenden, and Addison counties have had the opportunity to:
* Engage with healthcare professionals during hands-on workshops;
* Meet with post-high school student professionals pursuing healthcare careers; and
* Discover further available health career programs and resources.
Throughout the events of the day, a variety of occupations have been explored, exposing attendees to the diversity of career choices available within the field of health care.
In 2016-17 we will be eliciting feedback from our stakeholders about the needs of middle school and high school students given the new requirements related to Personalized Learning Plans and the best way to meet those needs. We will provide updates here on the site.
