Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Response
2014 Geriatric Emergency Preparedness Webinars through Stanford Geriatric Education Center
April 9, 2014, 3-4 pm ET – Navigating Current and New Guidelines and Requirements for Preparedness in Long-Term Care Settings
Federal and state disaster policymakers look to long-term care (LTC) facilities to provide shelter for hospitals and other LTC facilities during disasters. However, the available beds for immediate use are limited by federal and state legislation and regulation, the same authoritative agencies that expect effective response from LTC systems. The session will describe three state initiatives to mitigate the dilemma and challenges.
June 11, 2014, 3-4 pm ET – The “Active Shooter” in Long-Term Care and Assisted Living CommunitiesThe session will discuss preparedness issues in long-term care and assisted living facilities specific to patients/residents/ particularly the cognitively impaired, family, caregivers, and care providers to prevent, itigate and recover from an incident involving an “active shooter.” The incident is difficult to predict and can rapidly develop; usually an approach to selecting victims is undetectable, hence the element of surprise could create a destabilizing effect in the LTC setting. The session provides guidance to help LTC personnel (nursing and other care/service providers) and managers/administrators prevent and prepare for a potential crisis.

HPV
National AHEC Program to Improve HPV Vaccination Rates
The Champlain Valley AHEC is taking a lead role for the Vermont AHEC Network in participating in a National AHEC Program to improve HPV vaccination rates in Vermont. Working with the CDC’s “You are the Key to Cancer Prevention” program, the Vermont AHEC Network will offer education programs and materials for Vermont providers to improve the HPV vaccination rates of their patients. According to the Vermont Department of Health, 50% of teen girls and 70% of teen boys are NOT fully vaccinated against HPV.
Our HPV project lead Judy Wechsler wants you to know the most important things a provider can do to encourage HPV vaccination:
- Recommend it! More vaccinations occur as the result of recommendations by a trusted provider.
- Bundle it! Providing the HPV vaccine as part of the “bundle” of vaccines that 11 and 12 year old boys and girls routinely receive will result in higher vaccination rates.
- Reinforce it! Reinforce the fact that the HPV vaccine prevents cancer.
HPV Materials:
