National AHEC Program to Improve HPV Vaccination Rates

HPV_WebGraphicThe Champlain Valley AHEC is taking a lead role for the Vermont AHEC Network in participating in a National AHEC Program to improve HPV vaccination rates in Vermont. Working with the CDC’s “You are the Key to Cancer Prevention” program, the Vermont AHEC Network will offer education programs and materials for Vermont providers to improve the HPV vaccination rates of their patients. According to the Vermont Department of Health, 50% of teen girls and 70% of teen boys are NOT fully vaccinated against HPV.

Our HPV project lead Judy Wechsler wants you to know the most important things a provider can do to encourage HPV vaccination:

  • Recommend it! More vaccinations occur as the result of recommendations by a trusted provider.
  • Bundle it! Providing the HPV vaccine as part of the “bundle” of vaccines that 11 and 12 year old boys and girls routinely receive will result in higher vaccination rates.
  • Reinforce it! Reinforce the fact that the HPV vaccine prevents cancer.

  • Team Maureen with the generous support of the Massachusetts Coalition for HPV-Related Cancer Awareness and the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics have available at their website a toolkit helpful to dental health professionals. The toolkit contains relevant, medically sound, cancer prevention information to positively influence patients to make well-informed oral health and HPV cancer preventive decisions.

  • HPV Self Study Course: Continuing education training titled “You are the Key to HPV Cancer Prevention Continuing Education Training Self-Study Guide” is being offered by the National AHEC Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This self-study guide was designed to meet the educational needs of health professionals who provide and/or promote immunizations including physicians, registered nurses, and pharmacists.

Vermont Cancer and Chronic Disease Prevention Resources

Lack of exercise and poor nutrition contribute to obesity. Obesity contributes to the risk for both chronic disease and cancer. How might folks from chronic disease prevention and comprehensive cancer control come together in our region to develop a collaborative approach to improve access to nutrition, physical activity and lifestyle interventions?

cr-logoThe Champlain Valley Area Health Education Center has convened key stakeholders from Addison, Chittenden, Franklin and Grand Isle counties to develop and implement a collaborative approach to improve access to nutrition, physical activity and lifestyle interventions to reduce obesity related cancer and disease.

With funding from George Washington Cancer Institute, and joined by community providers and partners from the Vermont Department of Health, Blueprint, Vermont Cancer Center, Rise VT and American Cancer Society, we have chartered  the Champlain Valley Healthy Lifestyles Collaboration. Now in our second year, we are lending our support to advance Vermont’s new 3>4>50 campaign and working to increase provider awareness and recommendation of community based diabetes prevention programs.

Vermont’s 3>4>50 campaign is designed to raise awareness to the three behaviors – lack of physical activity, poor diet, and tobacco use – that lead to four chronic diseases – cancer, heart disease and stroke, type 2 diabetes, and lung disease – resulting in more than 50 percent of all deaths. Diabetes Prevention Materials and Programs

The Providers’ Guide for “Preventing Type 2 Diabetes,” developed by the Vermont Department of Health, The Vermont Blueprint for Health and the Greater Burlington YMCA, helps primary care office staff prevent diabetes by linking patients with the free, evidence-based diabetes prevention programs available throughout Vermont. The tools in this guide will assist providers in:

  • Screening and identifying patients for prediabetes programs
  • Referring patients to the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program
  • Coding office visits for reimbursement
  • Obtaining feedback about patients’ progress in the program

Migrant Farm Worker Resources

Lessons in Health Literacy Now Available!

The 2014 Champlain Valley AHEC Summer Project was set up to develop culturally and linguistically suitable lesson plans for healthcare professionals and students to use to introduce important U.S. healthcare topics to Vermont’s Latino/a migrant farm workers. The inter-professional student team (Jian Xin Huang, MS2 and Jack Fitch, RN NPS) developed their lesson plans with support from Champlain Valley AHEC, assisted by UVM Extension Bridges to Health/Puentes a la Salud, and shaped by several of their conversations with Latino/a migrant farm workers. These lesson plans include an “Overview of the U.S. Healthcare System,” and information on “Medical Bills” and “Financial Assistance,” with teacher and student versions in both Spanish and English.

Migrant Worker Health Booklet

Champlain Valley AHEC is delighted to showcase the Migrant Worker Health Booklet. This booklet was developed to empower Vermont’s migrant farm workers to address common health concerns in the safety of their homes and to make informed health care decisions about the point at which (and where) to access care. It is an easy-to-follow format accessible to those with a range of health literacy levels while simultaneously ensuring the inclusion of sufficient health information. The booklet is in English and Spanish to encourage communication about a specific health issue that a farm worker might face, to employers or community members who may assist in acquiring requested health care products or transport to needed health services.

Champlain Valley AHEC is proud to have supported the work of two UVM College of Medicine students who produced this resource as part of their Student Projects. Prabu Selvam, UVM College of Medicine Class of 2014, as part of his 3rd year Family Medicine’s rotation and Community Health Improvement Project and Alejandro Castro, UVM College of Medicine Class of 2016 as part of his 2013 AHEC Summer Project worked with Champlain Valley AHEC, UVM Extension’s Bridges to Health and other contributors (see acknowledgment page) to develop this easy to understand health information and resource for Vermont’s migrant workers.

Reference Guides for Latino Migrant Farm Workers in Addison and Franklin County

These Spanish and English language guides answer questions about healthcare access in Vermont’s agricultural communities where the highest number of Spanish-speaking farm workers reside and contribute to our farm economy. The guides provide information on how to make a medical or dental appointment, how to get low-cost care, what to bring and what to expect at your appointment and tips on follow-up care and referrals. The guides were originally developed by UVM College of Medicine (Class of 2014) students David Larsen and Peter Cooch.
