The mission of the Vermont Farm Health Task Force is to establish and maintain an inclusive statewide organization committed to promoting and sustaining a healthy, stable farm work force statewide. It utilizes a “common ground” approach that focuses on the commonalities and shared health and safety needs of all farmers, farm workers and farm families living and working on Vermont farms.
Through quarterly meetings, in-service trainings, and four program work groups, the task force and its members work to advance state and organizational policies and programs that improve the lives of all members of the Vermont farm community. Task force goals are focused on key aspects of farm safety, education and outreach, migrant and immigrant farm worker health and practitioner education.
A 48-hour Agricultural Medicine and Occupational Safety Training course on special health issues in the farming community is offered biennially. A new pilot will test a county-based collaborative model to provide agricultural medicine services in Addison County. The search for creating funding opportunities and working partnerships to develop new services for Vermont’s agricultural workforce and educating farm families, health care practitioners, agricultural professionals and the general public about the unique health and safety needs of people living on Vermont farms are other ongoing goals.
Task Force members work collaboratively on planning, resource development, program activities, and educating the members and other organizations about public policy issues that affect the Vermont farm community. Download the brochure (PDF).
Champlain Valley AHEC Spotlight on Migrant Worker Health Booklet
Champlain Valley AHEC offers a Migrant Worker Health Booklet. This booklet was developed to empower Vermont’s migrant farm workers to address common health concerns in the safety of their homes and to make informed health care decisions about the point at which (and where) to access care. It is an easy-to-follow format accessible to those with a range of health literacy levels while simultaneously ensuring the inclusion of sufficient health information. The booklet is in English and Spanish to encourage communication about a specific health issue that a farm worker might face, to employers or community members who may assist in acquiring requested health care products or transport to needed health services.
